Langley Good Times 2001

We arrived this year around 9:30 a.m. and found that most of the main parking areas were already brimming with vehicles.  Langley Good Times has now grown to the Largest one day car show in North America and we heard through the grape vine that Dennis Gage of My Classic Car stated that this event is one of the Worlds top ten, pretty impressive.  All though the main show is Saturday, Friday night there was a cruise to a local drive in theatre that is one of the few still standing and a movie.  We were told five hundred cars participated in this event.  This year there was also a cruise on Sunday although we did not attend.  It would appear this event is headed for a weekend long event because of it's popularity.  We heartily agree with long weekend shows, as many people travel great distances to attend these shows and we feel they should get a weekend out of it.  After attending to getting registered and a registration card in hand, we headed to the parking areas and we lucked out and drove straight in to a great spot were we could easily get out to head home when the time was right.  The scope of this show is hard to express but it is BIG !  We walked for hours, looking at all the vehicles, taking pictures and talking to old and new friends alike.  The weather was picture perfect, with a light breeze that kept the core temperature to a reasonable level.   There was a much larger area of vendor displays this year then previous which is great for local rodders to fill their desires for the weird little gizmos that they have been looking for and the show was even more spread out.  We are not sure of the final count of registered cars, but we expect it exceeded 2000.  The show occupies about one square mile of city streets, parking lots and parks.  The scope and breadth of cars at this show is mind boggling to say the least.  If it was made it was most likely here.  If you can't find something to tickle your fancy, you most likely have had a lobotomy.  I found a car tucked away on a side street I had never seen before or even knew they made and that was a Morris Minor Woody.  Very cool and a great restoration.  It is in the photo gallery of this event.  There  were two bands set up in different locations playing a broad selection of music from the 50s,60s, and 70s.  We especially liked the band playing at the nerve center of the show.  We spotted a local fish and Chip restaurant with a empty outside table and shade and made a grab for it.  The fish and chips where awesome and we can highly recommend them. The restaurants name was C-Lovers owned by Brad McLeod and located at 20251 Fraser Hwy Langley.  We noticed at each table there was a brown paper bag hanging from each umbrella at each table.  An inquiry as to their functioned revealed that they apparently kept the abundance of wasps away, the theory being that the wasps thought the bags were rivals nests.  It seemed to work, we never saw a single wasp although there were plenty flying around when we were walking around, but other then being a nuisance no one complained of being stung.  After our photo shoot, we spent the afternoon in our chairs people watching and BS'ing with the public at large.  The cross section of people there is staggering from babies to very elderly and all were enjoying this event enormously judging by the smiles.  We did not stay for the awards because of previous commitments, but previous years proved to be interesting and funny.  Once the show raps up all of those cars have to funnel out of this downtown core area, but it is amazing  how well this happens and the patients people have.  If you would like to attend a REALLY BIG EVENT, be sure to mark this on your calendar of must do's (at least once) and for a one day event we give it a 9 out of 10.
