HOTRODS & CLASSICS
The Blossom Run 2001
This year we went to the Blossom run on Thursday to get in that one extra day and giving us a nice kick back day Friday. We thought arriving this day early we would meet up with a Few early arrivals to BS with. What a shocker ... the camp grounds was over half full on our arrival. We were lucky enough to have pre-registered and had slightly stronger claim to a camping sites then someone just coming into the show and registering at the gate. We actually found a nice little corner of the camp ground that would accommodate all of our crew and eventually our stragglers filled it up.
The weatherman this year gave us a mix of sun and cloud with a few sprinkles thrown in for good measure. Sunday and Monday were both sunny and warm. At night is was coooold. I actually turned my furnace on to take the bite out of the air in the chief prior to crashing for the night. All in all though the weather was pretty decent.
Friday Night is the kickoff night with a Beer and Hot Dog social. The Hotdog thing is a mass of bodies and arms all jockeying for position with very sharp pointed wires with wieners impaled on the end in variations of one to three all heading for a very big fire. The fire is contained in a piece of what appears to be a very large section of drainpipe. I would guess it to be about 8 to 10 feet across.
Normally this scenario would not be of great concern, but as I elbowed my way towards the fire and rescue from the cold night air, it suddenly occured to me that I was walking through a crowd of Hotrodders that have had the opportunity to wash down a six pack by now, and that they were all trying for the same goal and all sporting those long, sharp wiener poles . All turned out fine however, no body got poked (at least by a wire coat hangers), the faces familiar, the talk was good, laughs were lots and the hotdogs ???? Well they went down just mighty dam fine with a swish of beer, thank you very much.
Up early on Saturday morning and it was looking pretty good weather wise. The smell of coffee and breakfast sifted through the campground making the morning that much more enjoyable. We lined up at 10 am or so and headed out on the annual poker run. As usual, the run took us through various types of country side with lot to see. My personal preference is a lot of country side and very little city.
We noticed this year there were no silly games at each check point as in previous years.... Committee members we WANT THEM BACK ! The run always culminates in the main city park in Summerland and is well received by the City. Lots of cars were at the park reflecting a cross section of regulars, and lots of new and unusual cars as well this year and judging by the amount that showed up, not all were camping at the camp ground.
The actual show and shine was over about 3pm and everyone headed out towards what ever was on their agendas. We headed off to our favorite little winery and did the tasting and purchasing of some very fine wines. This little winery in our option makes the biggies pale in comparison. If you ever make it up for this show, check out the local wineries, lots of surprises await you.
Sunday morning arrived clear and warm. I took the opportunity to walk around and spread as much BS with my fellow rodders as possible and also to check out what they where having for breakfast with the thought in mind that if theirs looked pretty good, I could possibly coerse them into inviting me to join for breakfast. It didn't happen... don't get me wrong I found plenty of great looking breakfasts that would have done me just fine, I just couldn't convince anyone to share with me. Sa Le Vie...
We headed out on our Sunday cruise around 10 am and cruised though some mighty fine country side with the cruise ending for lunch at Crystal Mountain Ski Resort. Crystal mountain resort supplied the lunch, a Pepsi and a burger which is standard fare. (Although we prefer last years outdoor cookout much better) Crystal Mountain was ill equipped to deal with volume of people that showed up and some rodders had to wait up to two hours to get there food and it was dam cool waiting outside of the chalet.
If your legs and lungs were up for it, you could get a free ride UP the chair lift and apparently great vistas were there for the viewing. The key word is a ride UP ..... you had to walk down. We never tried it, with my knees they would be air lifting me off the face of the mountain about halfway down.
Entertainment this year on Sunday night was the same gal as last year and is a very talented singer, not to mention being easy on the eyes to boot. She sang a variety of music, and was well received. You can see pictures of her and this event in our photo galleries # 10. If any of the committee members know her name, please contact us to give credit were credit is due.
A fun event and this car guy gives it a 7 out of 10 this year. ( We dropped it a point from last year for not having the silly games at checkpoints and the lunch thing) :0)
